Just in case you missed out on my previous post about how I am trying to limit my family’s food waste problem, yesterday I saved a whole bunch of fruit from being thrown away by dehydrating it. The plan is to make homemade oatmeal packets using dried fruit, old-fashioned oats (put through a food processor for a few second), powdered coffee creamer or powdered milk, a sweetener of choice and a few other add-ins depending on the fruit chose.
I received this wonderful dehydrator from my Uncle a couple of years ago and have done a lot with it, including homemade fruit leather! It’s pretty amazing and I think now that I am attempting to stretch our food more, it will come in handy! Click on the picture below to check it out if you are in the market for one. It works so well!

Well, I went to the store today. Twice. And forgot powdered milk/creamer both time. So all I have so far are some lovely baggies of dried fruit just waiting to be mixed with some oats.
There are some huge, plump, fresh raisins (which turned out delicious!) on the top left. Dried strawberries (which I will chop up smaller to put in the oatmeal), dried apple pieces, and dried banana chips (which I will also cut up).
Now, I know I could have prevented the apples and bananas from browning by adding some lemons juice to them before they were dehydrated, but this was on a whim and I didn’t even think about it nor did I have lemons at the time.
This is the amount that I got from 1 apple, about 5 strawberries, 2 small bananas, and 1 1/2 bags of grapes. Not so bad! I think it will stretch really far when it mix the rest of the ingredients in.
These will be perfect for when school starts in 6 more days! My kids are all about quick meals! I will post my progress when I actually remember to get all of the ingredients and have a recipe to go with it!
